Work Pass Guide

Three things every worker
must know before Singapore

Each phase of the work pass process has critical checkpoints. Miss one and it can cost you your job — or worse, your freedom.

01
Phase One
Before You Apply for Any Work Pass
This is the most critical phase. Decisions made before you apply determine everything — your safety, your salary, and your legal status in Singapore.
Know your employer

Research the company before signing anything. Know the job title, employer name, and exact address. You can verify on MOM's website for free.

Verify your IPA details

Your In-Principal Approval (IPA) must show the salary and occupation exactly as promised. Any discrepancy is a red flag — don't ignore it.

⚠ Agent fee cap

Agents can only charge 1 month's salary for a 1-year pass, or 2 months for a 2-year pass. Anything above this is illegal — report it to MOM immediately.

⚠ "Come first, convert later" scam

Never accept this arrangement. Working on the wrong pass is a criminal offence — not a minor technicality. You could be arrested, fined, or deported.

02
Phase Two
After Applying — Waiting & Verification
While waiting for your pass, there's important work to do. Don't just sit back — verify the company, cross-check your IPA, and know your rights.
Approval timelines

Work Permit approvals take ~1 working day. S-Pass and Employment Pass take 5 days to 3 weeks. Check status on MOM's online portal anytime.

When your IPA is ready

Ask your employer to share the IPA document. Cross-check occupation, company name, and salary against what was originally promised to you.

Verify the company (ACRA)

Purchase an ACRA business profile for SGD 5.50 on BizFile.gov.sg to confirm company name, directors, registered address, and business activity.

⚠ Something feels wrong?

Call MOM's helpline (6438 5122) before you travel. You can withdraw without penalty if the offer doesn't feel right. Never feel pressured to go.

03
Phase Three
After Arriving in Singapore
You're here — but your legal rights and obligations don't stop. Your pass must be issued before you start working. Not doing so is a criminal offence.
Pass must be issued first

Your employer must formally issue your work pass before your first day of work — no exceptions, no grey areas. Wait until it's confirmed.

Thumbprint registration

After your pass is issued, go immediately to an ICA or MOM centre for thumbprint registration. This is a legal requirement, not optional.

Card delivery

Your physical Work Pass card arrives by post within 5 working days. Carry it on you at all times — you may be asked to show it at any time.

⚠ Special pass ≠ work rights

A special pass does NOT grant you the right to work. Working on any pass other than your issued work pass is a criminal offence in Singapore.

Entry & Visas
